T. Bunke / Fuser News
Perhaps the only surprising thing about the Miami Herald headline of 11 March, which proclaims that there is “political blowback” to news that the United States and Venezuela have recently conducted the highest level of face-to-face discussions for several years, is that it has taken so long to appear.
The newspaper is a well-known mouthpiece for the Venezuelan Opposition which in turn is supported by a diaspora which has coagulated around Miami over the past decade and whose cause is championed by vote-desperados such as Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz.
The fact that it took seven days for the publication to highlight the alleged “political blowback” is a testament to the shock in which the Opposition remains after the seismic shift in US policy towards Venezuela, brought about by tragic events that have unfolded thousands of miles away in Ukraine.
Surprise factor?
That the Opposition was caught off-guard is a massive understatement. A face-saving announcement from the State Department claiming the Opposition had been “informed on Saturday morning” (the very day of arrival of the delegation in Caracas) cannot disguise the fact that the Opposition was regarded as an impediment to the national security interests of the United States.
These obviously outrank the electoral needs of the two honorable senators and they clearly stand well-ahead of pretending that the Opposition still matters or is regarded as having any meaningful relevance in the strategic dialogue that is unfolding between Washington and Caracas.
So, where does this leave the Opposition? Let us be clear it is not the Opposition but The Opposition to Progress, it is The Opposition to Prosperity and it is The Opposition to Peace. It must learn to say something other than “No!” to every initiative aimed at bringing an end to the suffering of the Venezuelan people at the hands of illegal unilaterally imposed economic sanctions by the United States.
Guaidó’s dead people
These are the same sanctions which, according to leading US economists Jeffrey Sachs and Mark Weisbrot in a damaging report from 2019, have killed over 40,000 brave Venezuelans.
These are the same sanctions which have been imposed with the full co-operation of the Opposition. Make no mistake – Guaido and Gang have the blood of 40,000 innocent Venezuelans on their hands and conscience.
Yet The Opposition to Progress still claims to want what’s best for Venezuela, but refuses to support the first significant breakthrough in the political impasse between Caracas and Washington for years. Why?
The answer is simple:
Guaido and Gang know that every day that passes with President Maduro remaining in power, is another day closer to the end of the gravy train for them.
The Opposition to Progress, The Opposition to Prosperity, The Opposition to Peace and Guaido and Gang – all take note. The Venezuelan people know how you have betrayed them and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
They may one day forgive you, but they will never forget.
